How does Stem Cell Therapy actually work?

Stem cell therapy is all about using your body’s own repair system to heal and regenerate damaged tissues. These cells are a promising option for treating arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases and even slowing down aging.

To dig more into how Stem Cell Therapy actually works, check out our article here.

Is Stem Cell Therapy Legal in Thailand in 2025?

No, Stem Cell Treatments aren’t legal in Thailand apart from treatments related to Hematology or corneal/limbal stem cell transplants

According to the Ministry of Public Health’s announcement on the standards for medical cell services of hospitals specifically for the use of cells for treatment in 2022, they confirmed these two things:

  •  Regarding treatment related to hematology, which the Medical Council has certified.
  • Any other additional diseases that the Medical Council or Dental Council has determined can be treated with Stem Cells.

This was again reiterated on October 31st, 2024, as you can read in this HFocus article.

Even though enforcement is pretty lax ( we all know tons of clinics operating in Thailand) there have been instances when the government has tried to clamp down.

As this article published in 2024 states,  there has been a significant increase in legal cases related to exaggerated stem cell claims in clinics, with over 400 cases being prosecuted annually.

Risks of getting Stem Cells in Thailand

Not everything is rosy though. Thailand has regulations in place under the Thai FDA, but they aren’t as strict as those in countries like the U.S., Canada, or Australia. This means:

  • With no government approvals or enforcements, there’s no guarantees on Stem Cell Quality.
  • Patients might unknowingly receive untested or experimental treatments, so choosing the right clinic is crucial.

If you’re looking at Stem Cell Clinics abroad, the biggest risk your taking is going to a clinic following poor standards. That’s why we take our vetting process so seriously. Read more about our process & why we do what we do below.

Other Risks in Thailand include:

  1. Where Do the Stem Cells in Thai Clinics Come From?
Not all clinics are upfront about where their stem cells come from. Are they from umbilical cord tissue, bone marrow, or fat cells? Are they even stem cells or just exosomes? Poorly processed or contaminated stem cells can lead to infections, immune reactions, or even treatment failure.

At Alt Treatment, we personally verify whether clinics have their own lab or source their stem cells from a trusted, certified provider. No guesswork, just transparency.
  2. Follow-Up Care is Often Overlooked
Many patients fly in for treatment and leave soon after, but what happens if there are side effects like swelling, immune reactions, or complications once they’re back home? Getting proper follow-up care can be difficult.

That’s why we ensure every clinic we work with offers ongoing patient support. If there’s an issue, we step in to help, you’re never left on your own. Don’t worry we’re with you all the way!
  3. Beware of Misinformation & Fake Promises
Some clinics heavily market their treatments using celebrity endorsements, social media ads, and glowing testimonials. But here’s the truth:

🚨 No stem cell therapy guarantees results, anyone claiming otherwise is misleading you.
🚨 “No side effects” isn’t real, every medical procedure carries some level of risk.
🚨 It doesn’t cure everything, stem cell therapy isn’t a magic fix for all diseases.

At Alt Treatment, we never partner with clinics that make false promises or rely on flashy marketing instead of real science. Your safety comes first.
