Stem Cell Therapy Bahamas

By fostering these therapies, we can potentially alleviate the burden of chronic diseases, reduce healthcare costs and improve overall quality of life for our citizens

This is what the Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. Michael R. Darville stated on April 17th 2024 as he presented and laid the Longevity and Regenerative Therapies Bill, 2024 in the House of Assembly.

The Bahamas is doing a big push on Stem Cell Therapy, but is it really a good destination for Stem Cell Therapy?

We break down the legal situation & compare costs across the Americas to help you make that decision.

Are Stem Cells Legal in the Bahamas in 2025

Yes, according to the updated Longevity & Regenerative Therapies BIll 2024, clinics can offer Stem Cell Treatments in the Bahamas, provided they have the relevant authorizations. But it’s not that simple. The process here is very similar to how Japan’s Regenerative Medicine Laws.

Not every clinic can legally offer stem cell treatments. And there are still clinics that are operating outside of the law, so you still need to be aware of this before you rush into choosing your clinic.

We break down the approval process below:

How do Stem Cell Therapy Clinics get approval in the Bahamas

To get approval, stem cell clinics may only offer treatments if they are licensed healthcare facilities and the specific therapy protocol has been approved by the national Ethics Review Committee and authorized by the Regenerative Therapy Board. Here’s the workflow:

01

Get Licensed as a Healthcare Facility

Clinics must first be registered and licensed under the Bahamas Hospitals and Health Care Facilities Act. Without this, no stem cell treatment can legally take place.

02

Have Qualified Doctors in Place

Only licensed physicians in The Bahamas can administer treatments. Foreign specialists can participate, but only if approved by regulators and partnered with a Bahamian-licensed doctor.

03

Submit Therapy Protocol for Ethics Review & Pay Fees

Before treating any patients, the clinic must apply to the Ethics Review Committee. This committee looks at the specific therapy (e.g., orthopedic use of stem cells) and decides if it’s safe and scientifically valid. Each application must include the prescribed fee.

04

Receive Final Board Authorization

If the Ethics Review Committee approves the protocol, the National Longevity & Regenerative Therapy Board issues written authorization. Only then can the clinic begin offering the treatment to patients.

Clinics don’t get one blanket license for “stem cells.” Instead, every treatment must have its own written authorization.

For example, if a clinic wants to treat orthopedic injuries and Parkinson’s disease, they need two separate authorizations, one for each condition.

This ensures every therapy offered has been specifically reviewed and cleared for safety and effectiveness.

Stem Cells used in the Bahamas

Most Stem Cell clinics in the Bahamas will be offering umbilical cord derived Stem Cell treatments, whether they have the authorizations or not.

But how many clinics in the Bahamas are following these regulations? The questions are still out.

The act does state the minister can immediately suspend clinics who don’t follow regulations, & serve fines and prison sentences.

If you are visiting the Bahama’s for Stem Cell Treatment, make sure you’re doing your due diligence on Stem Cell clinics.

What conditions can be treated with Stem Cells in the Bahamas

In the updated act, there’s no list of approved or banned conditions. so technically as long as the specific protocol has been authorized, any condition can be treated.

But there is a difference between treatments that are approved and those still classed as experimental. Clinics can offer both but here’s the distinction:

Full Approval
Patients can receive the treatment as a normal clinical service.
The therapy has passed review for safety, efficacy and ethics.
ℹ️ Provisional Approval
Patients can also receive the treatment.
But it comes with conditions (extra monitoring, reporting, or evidence requirements).
It’s offered clinically, but it’s not yet considered fully proven.
🔬 Research Approval
Patients cannot just walk into a clinic and buy the treatment.
It may only be given as part of a clinical trial or research study.
Patients are enrolled as participants in experimental research.

This is why you see quite a few clinics in The Bahamas offer stem cell therapies as “paid clinical trials.”

This means the treatment is still experimental, it has research approval and not full approval. By marketing it as a “paid clinical trial”, it allows clinics to offer these treatments legally.

Is the Bahamas better than Antigua for Stem Cell Therapy?

Regulations are stricter in the Bahamas than in Antigua, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily better.

Both countries have legalized Stem Cell Therapy, but Antigua’s laws are not as in depth as Bahama’s Longevity & Regenerative Therapies Bill in 2024. And both countries are really trying to capture global medical tourism and position themselves as leaders in Stem Cell Therapy.

No doubt, if you’re in the US you’ve heard the stories of famous people travelling to both countries for different reasons. But as of right now, we don’t have the evidence to say which country is better or worse than one another.

Our team can walk you through the individual regulations for each country & how we vet clinics specifically. To read how we do this, the button below takes you to our Processes Page.

From a holiday destination perspective, there’s amazing beaches & scenery. It’s a great place to relax.
