No, any Stem Cell treatment involving culturing or manipulating Mesenchymal Stem Cells is not legal in Brazil according to Anvisa’s official stance published online.
However, if treatment involves using minimally manipulated MSC cells, is used for homologous purposes, is completed in the same day & the clinic holds Vigilância Sanitária license, then it is allowed.
Who regulates Stem Cell Therapy in Brazil?
ANVISA is Brazil’s National health Agency & they regulate Stem Cell treatments.
According to them:
“Currently, the only stem cell treatments recognized as effective and safe in Brazil involve blood-forming stem cells (also known as hematopoietic progenitor cells). These treatments include:
- intended for bone marrow transplantation;
- approved for use in patients with hematologic disorders such as leukemia and lymphoma;
- indicated by specialist doctors and administered in specific health services (transplant centers).”
ANVISA warned the public about unauthorized use of Stem Cell Therapy in their official press release.
